Teeth whitening

Professional whitening uses bleaching agents to lighten the colour of suitable natural teeth. Stains, existing restorations and tooth sensitivity all affect the plan. All Care starts with an examination and a discussion of the shade change you hope to achieve.

01

Whitening and stain removal

Whitening changes natural tooth colour; cleaning and polishing remove deposits and some surface stains. The cause of discolouration determines which approach may help. Whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings.

02

The whitening process

The dentist checks teeth and gums, records the starting shade and explains the proposed method. In-clinic treatment or a dentist-supervised home approach may be discussed according to suitability and current availability. Follow the prescribed instructions.

03

Results and sensitivity

The response differs from person to person and some stains are less responsive. Temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation can occur. Tell your dentist about existing sensitivity and stop to seek advice if discomfort is significant.

04

Maintaining the shade

Brush and clean between teeth, attend reviews and discuss habits that contribute to staining. Tobacco and some drinks can affect colour. Ask about maintenance and whether replacement of visible restorations would be needed to match a new shade.

YOUR QUESTIONS, EXPLAINED

Before your visit.

Does whitening regrow enamel?

No. Whitening changes colour, and enamel does not regenerate. A dentist should assess worn or damaged teeth before bleaching.

Why might teeth still look yellow?

Natural tooth colour, dentine, the type of stain and existing restorations affect appearance. Your dentist can explain realistic results.

What happens at my consultation?

Bring your medical history, current medicines and any previous dental records. The clinician examines your mouth and recommends tests or imaging when needed. You can discuss the proposed care, alternatives, timing, costs and follow-up before making a decision.
