How aligners work
Records and scans help plan a series of small tooth movements. Each tray is worn for the period prescribed before moving to the next. Attachments, other aids or additional trays may be needed. Review appointments allow the clinician to check progress and fit.
Who can use aligners?
Suitability depends on the type and complexity of the bite problem, tooth and gum health, growth and the ability to wear the trays consistently. Aligners can address more than very small changes, but braces may be preferable for some movements.
Benefits and practical considerations
The trays are removable for meals and oral hygiene, and their clear appearance is less noticeable than fixed brackets. Consistent wear is essential. Pressure or temporary discomfort can occur when trays change; a poorly fitting or damaged tray should be checked.
Treatment time and care
There is no single timetable for everyone. Follow the prescribed wear schedule and review plan. Remove trays for eating as advised, clean teeth before replacing them, and clean trays using the instructions provided. A retainer is usually part of maintaining the result.
YOUR QUESTIONS, EXPLAINED
Before your visit.
Are aligners always faster than braces?
No. Duration depends on the movements required, treatment response and adherence. Your clinician can discuss an estimate after assessment.
Can I eat with my aligners in?
Remove them for meals and follow the clinician’s instructions for drinks and cleaning. Keep them in their case when they are out.
What happens at my consultation?
Bring your medical history, current medicines and any previous dental records. The clinician examines your mouth and recommends tests or imaging when needed. You can discuss the proposed care, alternatives, timing, costs and follow-up before making a decision.

Make an informed choice.
Use this guide to prepare questions for a dental consultation. Your diagnosis, treatment suitability, number of visits and estimate depend on an individual examination. Tell the team about previous treatment, medical conditions and any concerns about comfort.
