Gum grafting

Gum recession can expose a root surface and sometimes cause sensitivity or make cleaning difficult. A gum graft may be considered for selected areas after assessment of the cause and the health of the supporting tissues. Not every recessed area needs surgery.

What is a gum graft?

Grafting adds tissue to a selected area to improve the gum coverage or tissue support. The type and source of graft are chosen by the clinician according to the defect and the treatment aim.

02

Reasons to consider treatment

Exposed roots, tissue vulnerability, cleaning difficulty or appearance concerns may prompt an assessment. Plaque control, brushing habits and other contributing factors are addressed alongside any surgical plan.

03

Types and procedure

The original site describes connective tissue, free gingival and pedicle graft approaches. An examination determines what is appropriate. The clinician explains the tissue source, anaesthesia, steps, healing expectations and possible risks before treatment.

04

Aftercare and follow-up

Follow the specific instructions for cleaning, eating and activity around the surgical site. Avoid disturbing the area and attend reviews. Contact the clinic about excessive bleeding, worsening pain or other concerns. The amount of root coverage achievable varies.

YOUR QUESTIONS, EXPLAINED

Before your visit.

Will a graft cover every exposed root fully?

Complete coverage is not always achievable. The site, extent of recession and tissue condition affect the expected result.

Is grafting always necessary for recession?

No. Assessment may lead to changes in cleaning, monitoring or other care. Surgery is selected for an identified need.

What happens at my consultation?

Bring your medical history, current medicines and any previous dental records. The clinician examines your mouth and recommends tests or imaging when needed. You can discuss the proposed care, alternatives, timing, costs and follow-up before making a decision.
