What are cosmetic fillings?
These restorations use tooth-coloured material, commonly composite resin, to repair suitable cavities or defects. The goal is to restore shape and function while keeping the repair visually discreet.
Benefits and limitations
Shade matching can create a natural appearance, and composite can often be repaired. The size and position of a cavity affect durability. A heavily damaged tooth may need an inlay, onlay or crown instead of a direct filling.
The restoration process
After assessment and preparation, the material is placed, shaped and hardened as required. The dentist checks the contacts and bite, then polishes the restoration. Existing restorations are assessed before a cosmetic replacement is recommended.
Maintaining the repair
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and follow the review schedule recommended for you. Avoid biting objects and discuss any grinding habit. Contact the clinic if a filling feels high, chips or becomes uncomfortable.
YOUR QUESTIONS, EXPLAINED
Before your visit.
Can I replace an old filling for appearance?
It may be possible, but removing a sound filling also affects tooth structure. Discuss the benefits and risks of replacement.
Is a cosmetic filling the same as a veneer?
No. A filling repairs a local area; a veneer covers the front surface for different indications. Assessment helps choose between them.
What happens at my consultation?
Bring your medical history, current medicines and any previous dental records. The clinician examines your mouth and recommends tests or imaging when needed. You can discuss the proposed care, alternatives, timing, costs and follow-up before making a decision.

Make an informed choice.
