Why magnification matters
The canal system can be small and complex. Magnification can help identify canal openings, inspect details and support precise work. It complements examination, imaging and the clinician’s judgement.
When it may be useful
Complex anatomy, re-treatment, investigation of cracks and other technically demanding situations may benefit from magnification. A microscope is a tool for selected tasks and does not by itself establish a diagnosis or guarantee a result.
Your appointment
The clinician explains the proposed treatment, uses anaesthesia where appropriate and isolates the tooth. The microscope may be used at stages of inspection and treatment. Canal cleaning, sealing and the final restoration remain part of the overall plan.
Recovery and follow-up
Care instructions depend on the procedure performed. Attend reviews and complete the planned restoration. Temporary tenderness may occur; persistent pain, swelling or difficulty with the bite should be assessed.
YOUR QUESTIONS, EXPLAINED
Before your visit.
Is microscopic dentistry only for root canals?
Magnification can assist other dental work, but this page focuses on its role in endodontic care.
Will the microscope make treatment painless?
It improves visibility. Comfort depends on appropriate anaesthesia and individual circumstances, which should be discussed separately.
What happens at my consultation?
Bring your medical history, current medicines and any previous dental records. The clinician examines your mouth and recommends tests or imaging when needed. You can discuss the proposed care, alternatives, timing, costs and follow-up before making a decision.

Make an informed choice.
Use this guide to prepare questions for a dental consultation. Your diagnosis, treatment suitability, number of visits and estimate depend on an individual examination. Tell the team about previous treatment, medical conditions and any concerns about comfort.
