Restorative dentistry

Dental bridges

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth using support from neighbouring teeth or implants. It can help restore the appearance of a smile and the ability to chew. A consultation compares bridges with implants and removable replacements so you can make an informed choice.

What a bridge does

An artificial replacement tooth spans a gap and is joined to supporting restorations. The design depends on the location and size of the gap, the bite and the health of possible supporting teeth.

02

Planning your replacement

Your dentist examines the support available and checks tooth and gum health. A conventional bridge may require preparation of neighbouring teeth; an implant-supported design has different requirements. Alternatives and their maintenance needs should be discussed.

03

The bridge process

The supporting teeth or implants are prepared as appropriate and records are taken for the laboratory. A temporary replacement may be provided. At fitting, the dentist checks appearance, contact points and the bite before securing the bridge.

04

Cleaning and cost

You need to clean beneath the replacement tooth as well as around its supports. Ask the team to demonstrate suitable cleaning aids. Cost depends on the number of units, materials, type of support and preparatory care; an assessment is needed for an estimate.

YOUR QUESTIONS, EXPLAINED

Before your visit.

How many teeth can a bridge replace?

The available support and forces on the bridge determine its design. A longer gap may need another replacement approach.

Are implants the only alternative?

No. Removable dentures and other bridge designs may also be options. The best fit depends on your clinical needs and preferences.

What happens at my consultation?

Bring your medical history, current medicines and any previous dental records. The clinician examines your mouth and recommends tests or imaging when needed. You can discuss the proposed care, alternatives, timing, costs and follow-up before making a decision.
