When polishing helps
The dentist or hygienist first assesses deposits, staining and gum health. Polishing may form part of a cleaning appointment where it is appropriate.
Limits of stain removal
Not every colour change is a surface stain. Internal discolouration, restorations or underlying tooth conditions need a different assessment. Repeated or aggressive polishing is not the answer to every concern.
Keeping the mouth clean
Maintain effective daily plaque control and discuss habits that contribute to staining. Ask for individual advice around sensitive teeth, exposed roots and restorations.
Understanding gum disease
Plaque can cause gum inflammation, known as gingivitis. Periodontitis involves damage to the supporting tissues and requires a more detailed assessment. Treatment and maintenance are chosen according to the extent of the condition.
Signs worth checking
Bleeding when brushing, persistent bad breath, swollen gums, recession, new gaps or tooth movement should be assessed. Other causes are also possible, so symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis.
Treatment options
An examination checks gum health and may include measurements and imaging. Professional cleaning, scaling and root surface debridement may be advised. Surgery or grafting is considered for selected needs, with a maintenance plan after initial treatment.

Make an informed choice.
Use this guide to prepare questions for a dental consultation. Your diagnosis, treatment suitability, number of visits and estimate depend on an individual examination. Tell the team about previous treatment, medical conditions and any concerns about comfort.
