Avoid over-brushing
Excessive pressure and abrasive habits can contribute to wear or gum recession. Ask about a suitable toothbrush and technique, particularly if you have sensitivity or exposed roots.
Cleaning and whitening have different roles
Cleaning removes deposits and some stains; bleaching changes the colour of natural teeth. Whitening is not a substitute for plaque control or treatment of decay and gum disease.
A routine you can maintain
Brush regularly with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth and follow your individual review schedule. Discuss diet and any hard-to-clean restorations or appliances.
Why a filling is needed
Decay damages tooth structure. A filling can restore the shape and seal the prepared area when the damage is suitable for this type of repair. A deep cavity, crack or larger loss of structure may need a different treatment.
The filling method
The dentist examines the tooth and may recommend an X-ray. Local anaesthesia is used where appropriate, the damaged area is removed and the tooth is restored with the chosen material. The surface and bite are checked at the end.
Choosing a material
Tooth-coloured composite is one restoration option. The location, size of the cavity, bite and ability to keep the area dry influence material selection. Ask about the proposed material, alternatives and maintenance before treatment.

Make an informed choice.
Use this guide to prepare questions for a dental consultation. Your diagnosis, treatment suitability, number of visits and estimate depend on an individual examination. Tell the team about previous treatment, medical conditions and any concerns about comfort.
