Cleaning technique
Brush thoroughly and gently and clean between teeth using an aid suited to the spaces. Ask for a demonstration. Aggressive scrubbing can be harmful; effective cleaning is about technique and consistency.
Diet, smoking and health history
Frequent sugar exposure can increase decay risk, and smoking affects gum health. Tell the dentist about medicines and medical conditions so advice and treatment can be tailored.
Professional gum care
Scaling or deeper periodontal care may be advised after assessment. A mouthwash cannot replace the removal of established deposits or the maintenance plan required for gum disease.
Understanding gum disease
Plaque can cause gum inflammation, known as gingivitis. Periodontitis involves damage to the supporting tissues and requires a more detailed assessment. Treatment and maintenance are chosen according to the extent of the condition.
Signs worth checking
Bleeding when brushing, persistent bad breath, swollen gums, recession, new gaps or tooth movement should be assessed. Other causes are also possible, so symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis.
Treatment options
An examination checks gum health and may include measurements and imaging. Professional cleaning, scaling and root surface debridement may be advised. Surgery or grafting is considered for selected needs, with a maintenance plan after initial treatment.
Make an informed choice.
Use this guide to prepare questions for a dental consultation. Your diagnosis, treatment suitability, number of visits and estimate depend on an individual examination. Tell the team about previous treatment, medical conditions and any concerns about comfort.
