An examination before symptoms
Some decay and gum problems do not cause pain at first. An examination can identify concerns and guide monitoring or treatment. Imaging is chosen according to clinical need.
A practical prevention plan
Ask for advice that fits your mouth and daily habits: brushing, interdental cleaning, diet and any needs around restorations or appliances. The review interval should reflect your individual risk.
Clear communication
Understand the diagnosis, alternatives, estimate and urgency before starting treatment. Tell the team about medical conditions, medicines and any previous difficulty with dental visits.
Why a filling is needed
Decay damages tooth structure. A filling can restore the shape and seal the prepared area when the damage is suitable for this type of repair. A deep cavity, crack or larger loss of structure may need a different treatment.
The filling method
The dentist examines the tooth and may recommend an X-ray. Local anaesthesia is used where appropriate, the damaged area is removed and the tooth is restored with the chosen material. The surface and bite are checked at the end.
Choosing a material
Tooth-coloured composite is one restoration option. The location, size of the cavity, bite and ability to keep the area dry influence material selection. Ask about the proposed material, alternatives and maintenance before treatment.

Make an informed choice.
Use this guide to prepare questions for a dental consultation. Your diagnosis, treatment suitability, number of visits and estimate depend on an individual examination. Tell the team about previous treatment, medical conditions and any concerns about comfort.
