Decay and sensitivity
A cavity may develop before pain begins. Sensitivity may relate to exposed roots, wear, decay or a restoration, among other causes. Tell the dentist when it occurs and how long it lasts.
Gum bleeding and bad breath
Plaque-related inflammation is one possible cause. Persistent bleeding or breath changes need assessment and a cleaning plan suited to the findings.
Cracks, alignment and missing teeth
A cracked tooth, crowded teeth and a gap from tooth loss are three different concerns. Repair, orthodontic care or replacement may be considered after checking the bite and supporting tissues.
Why a filling is needed
Decay damages tooth structure. A filling can restore the shape and seal the prepared area when the damage is suitable for this type of repair. A deep cavity, crack or larger loss of structure may need a different treatment.
The filling method
The dentist examines the tooth and may recommend an X-ray. Local anaesthesia is used where appropriate, the damaged area is removed and the tooth is restored with the chosen material. The surface and bite are checked at the end.
Choosing a material
Tooth-coloured composite is one restoration option. The location, size of the cavity, bite and ability to keep the area dry influence material selection. Ask about the proposed material, alternatives and maintenance before treatment.

Make an informed choice.
Use this guide to prepare questions for a dental consultation. Your diagnosis, treatment suitability, number of visits and estimate depend on an individual examination. Tell the team about previous treatment, medical conditions and any concerns about comfort.
